Real and fake news
What is fake news
Fraudulent, misstatement, falsification, just to protect one's intellectual property, things
get fake. Fake and filthy enough to spread the news over the world.
Nowadays, fake news is circulating around the globe ostentatiously, even causing fear to
its intended audiences. Yellow journalism is a great example of "Fake News" that includes
intentionally falsified or fabricated information which is published in several media such as in
televisions, traditional newspapers and online on social media websites. The social media
platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and many other websites. Additionally,
individuals who create fake news are commonly experts who know how to manipulate and gain
the attention of people towards their articles or videos they broadcast. However, not all news is
fake on social media websites. The obvious method is spreading all sorts of fake information
throughout multiple social media platforms since they are presently the most advanced
communication platforms that exist in this generation. In comparison to traditional media such as
magazines, newspapers, televisions, and radios; social media platforms have attained the top
place in terms of the manifestation of fake news. Furthermore, the reason why fake news is
created could be done as a form of activism, confronting or supporting political issues, for
monetization, or even for fame and rep

Sri Lanka: The fake ‘invasions’ of a broadcaster and Central Bank
Mass protests over Sri Lanka's worst economic crisis in decades have escalated this past week after crowds breached official buildings.
But while protesters did in fact force their way into the Sri Lankan presidential residence and break into the prime minister's office in Colombo, misleading claims of other break-ins spiralled on social media.
We've looked at a viral claim that the island's national broadcaster had been "taken over", as well as a video alleging that protesters had broken through to Sri Lanka's Central Bank.
No, protesters did not 'take over' Sri Lanka's national broadcaster
On Wednesday, major global media outlets mistakenly reported that Sri Lanka's national broadcaster Rupavahini was taken over by protesters.
Fake news is a global issue, and Sri Lanka has also been affected by it in various forms. Here are some examples of fake news or misinformation that have circulated in Sri Lanka:
1. Anti-Muslim Misinformation
(2018)During the communal unrest in 2018, false claims spread through social media, suggesting that Muslim restaurants were serving food laced with chemicals to sterilize Sinhalese people. These rumors fueled ethnic tensions and led to violence in some parts of the country. There was no evidence to support these claims, but the rumors caused significant harm.
2. Easter Sunday Attacks
(2019)After the 2019 Easter bombings, several conspiracy theories and false reports circulated. One such claim falsely linked certain politicians to the attackers or suggested foreign governments were involved in orchestrating the attacks. These baseless allegations spread widely, causing further panic and mistrust among communities.

3. COVID-19 Misinformation (2020-2021) During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka saw a surge in fake news related to the virus. Claims like certain herbal remedies could cure COVID-19 or that vaccines were dangerous were shared on social media. Some people even falsely claimed that the virus didn’t exist or that the government was inflating case numbers. This misinformation impacted public health efforts and caused confusion.

What is Real news
When people talk about "real news," they usually mean accurate, reliable, and factual reporting, typically coming from trusted, established sources that follow journalistic standards. Real news is based on verified facts, impartial analysis, and credible sources, unlike misinformation, disinformation, or sensationalism.
Sri Lanka is currently navigating several key developments, particularly in the areas of politics and the economy:
Presidential Election and Economic Challenges:
A significant recent event was the election of a new president with a Marxist-leaning background, Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This election comes amidst the country's ongoing economic crisis, and the new leadership has a monumental task ahead. Dissanayake must continue working with the IMF until at least 2027, ensuring Sri Lanka adheres to its financial recovery plan to stabilize the economy. This plan includes repaying debts and attracting investment while addressing poverty, which affects a large portion of the population.
Sri Lanka's IMF Program: The IMF's influence in Sri Lanka is growing as the country struggles to recover from its recent economic collapse. Although the program is vital for regaining stability, it has also been criticized for depressing domestic demand and exacerbating poverty.
.Security and Legal Developments:
In other news, Sri Lanka's Supreme Court recently emphasized that the storage of child pornographic material is a serious offense under the POCSO Act, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen legal measures around child protection.
.These updates reflect the complex political, economic, and social challenges Sri Lanka is currently facing.
